Sea Tangle
Statement
I began creating sea tangle with video footage culled from public archives, drawing on scientific investigations into plant growth and photosynthesis, as well as anonymous home movie collections of coastal exploration. I manipulated this footage through abstraction, overlay, and projection mapping to encourage close looking and listening on the viewer's part. This collected film is projected into the small opening of a wall-mounted sculpture. The sculpture’s form is that of Laminaria Digitata, a seaweed that grows in sublittoral zones of the Northern Atlantic Ocean, rendered in material that resembles coral. Next to this sculpture, a projection of ocean waves crashing against a shore also appears through a seaweed’s form, albeit constructed through light instead of physical material.
